From Autonomous University of Madrid –> To University of Southern Denmark
As a PhD student at the Department of Psychiatry in the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), I have been actively involved in collaborative actions with other foreign institutions in international epidemiological projects focused on health trajectories in population-based cohorts (e.g. the ATHLOS project). I am particularly interested in age-related cognitive decline and its determinants.
The host team in University of Southern Denmark, led by Prof. Kaare Christensen at the Danish Aging Research Centre (DARC), has expertise in epidemiology of cognition and determinants of cognitive functioning. During the two-week stay at the DARC I have conducted preliminary analyses using the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) dataset, focusing on the longitudinal associations of visual and hearing impairments with cognitive functioning eight years later. Preliminary results indicate that visual and hearing difficulties might be early indicators of cognitive decline, since older adults with sensory impairments experience an accelerated rate of cognitive decline.
