Let us walk into the light

By Professor Tasos Christofides, Rector of University of Cyprus

As another year draws to a close, we pause to reflect on what we have learned. Looking back on our resolutions for 2024, we realise that many of our aspirations, hopes and goals came to fruition. Others, however, have evolved, taken new forms, or been postponed – reminding us that each year is unique in its challenges and opportunities.

With the passage of time, we change, learn, and grow. This is, after all, the essence of human nature and the mission of academic institutions: to continuously evolve in response to the needs of society, while standing firmly in defence of humanity when called upon.

Undoubtedly, we face challenging times ahead. The landscape of higher education is transforming, shaped by rapidly advancing technologies, the integration of AI, shifting societal and industrial demands, and the pressing need for resources to support innovation in research and teaching.

In this demanding era, our greatest strengths lie in collaboration, networking, and alliances. Together, we learn and grow, empowered by the incredible people who drive our universities forward.

As we step into 2025, let us walk into the light. Let us be the light, just as I encourage our students, to illuminate the world with our example, dispelling darkness, shadows, and misconceptions. Let us strive for what is just and fair, working towards the betterment of society with conviction and integrity.

As we celebrate the successes, embrace new challenges, acknowledge failures, and learn from the lessons of 2024, may we remain hopeful and with unwavering faith in the role of universities. Together, let us continue to grow and contribute to the advancement of our institutions and our world.
