In addition to several EU projects currently being carried out, either at national level or in cooperation with partners from abroad, the University of Rijeka continues to support the progress of science and the exchange of knowledge for the benefit of society by adopting practices of open, repeatable, and responsible research. As a proud holder of the ‘’HR Excellence in Research’’ Award and the host of a prestigious ERC Grant, UNIRI continues to promote openness and innovative approaches to science, thus striving to break all boundaries and show that science is not and should not be boring or exclusive.
In line with this year UNIRI’s motto – healthy community and wellbeing – the University of Rijeka has decided to make science accessible and open to everyone and promote scientific discussions and exchange of ideas with the community. Under the co-organisation of esteemed Croatian scientists with outstanding (inter)national careers – Nenad Ban, Ivan Đikić, Stipan Jonjić, Ivana Novak Nakir, Igor Rudan, Igor Štagljar, Iva Tolić and Adrijana Vinter – the University of Rijeka is a proud host of the first-ever CROSCIENCE 2024 Symposium, taking place on September 27 and 28.
This innovative gathering will convene leading scientists from Croatia and abroad, along with other eminent experts. The symposium will cover a broad spectrum of topics spanning biomedical, natural, and social sciences. Instead of traditional lectures, the programme will feature interactive panel discussions and inspire and guide the next generation of scientists in their unique career paths. To create and facilitate the continuity of such discussions, CROSCIENCE should start a new tradition of annual gatherings of Croatian scientists, affirming the cooperation of the academic community in Croatia and the diaspora.
The first day of the conference will finish with a joint visit to Exportdrvo and Rijeka’s lively celebration of this year’s European Researchers’ Night. This year, Rijeka is among several Croatian cities (along with Split, Pula, Zadar, and Dubrovnik) that participate in numerous scientific and social activities, intending to attract people of all levels of education, especially children and young people. All citizens of Rijeka can expect a Night full of interactive content, practical experiments, workshops, presentations, educational exhibitions, games, and competitions, and they will have a special opportunity to engage with esteemed Croatian scientists living and working abroad.
University of Rijeka’s thought-provoking discussions about science and scientists will continue in October, as the university is honoured to host the second edition of “Women Who are Changing Science – Driving Bold Research in Canada and Croatia Conference”, organised by the University of Toronto, the Embassy of Canada in Croatia, the Ruđer Bošković Institute, the Faculty of Science of the University of Zagreb, and the University of Rijeka. The conference will be held on October 8 in Zagreb, and October 9 in Rijeka, and will feature keynote lectures from prominent Canadian and Croatian female scientists (Rima Al-awar, Samantha Gruenheid, Vanda Juranić Lisnić, Adrijana Vinter, Andreja Ambriović Ristov, Rosa Karlić). In addition to emphasising the role of inclusive science in building a sustainable future through science, technology, and innovation, this event will also shed some light on challenges and opportunities for women in science.
