Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń is a European research university with a broad
profile. Its operation refers to the life’s work and attitude of its great patron and the heritage of
the Stephen Bathory University in Vilnius and the John Casimir University in Lvov.
The University’s mission is the top world standard research, education following the latest
scientific accomplishments, and an active effect on the living standard of the residents of the
kujawsko-pomorski region. NCU is part of the European consortium ‘Young Universities for
the Future of Europe’, which aims at developing a new higher education model to respond to
the challenges of contemporary times. NCU, as one of ten Polish universities, obtained the
status of a research university and is implementing the six-year project ‘Excellence Initiative
– Research University’. It also supports educational and cultural activity aimed at people of
different ages and stages of education.
NCU is one of several Polish universities listed in international rankings, while in the
Perspektywy national ranking it remains in the top five. It was the first university in Poland to
achieve the prestigious HR Excellence in Research award, which is a confirmation of the
consistency of its research recruitment activities with the European Charter for Researchers
