The University of Bremen: a Place of Lifelong Learning

The University of Bremen’s Academy of Continuing Education is the central point of contact for anyone interested in receiving further training, be they working people, jobseekers, people returning to work, or senior citizens. The academy’s diverse range of programs gives people the opportunity to acquire skills at an academic level, regardless of whether they have a university degree.

Nowadays, universities are called upon to provide opportunities for gaining qualifications that suit every phase of life – even beyond the traditional bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. In the knowledge society, learning and education are among the most valuable resources. Due to technological and societal changes, it is particularly important for highly qualified people to continue their training throughout their working lives.

The University of Bremen therefore sees itself as a place of lifelong learning. With a wide range of flexible further training opportunities, prospective students can choose an education pathway that suits their professional and personal situation. Short- or long-term continuing education courses are aimed at employed people with and without a university degree, as well as university graduates looking for work, people returning to work, and people with a migrant background. In addition to continuing education courses with or without a certificate, there are several part-time master’s degree programs. The University of Bremen is particularly keen to combine continuing education and undergraduate studies in order to facilitate intergenerational learning.

“Research-based learning” and interdisciplinarity are also key pillars in the vocational courses. Another focus is on practical relevance in order to ensure knowledge can be transferred into professional activities.

The University of Bremen offers a comprehensive senior degree program for retired people.

Thanks to the Academy of Continuing Education, the University of Bremen has a central point of contact for all aspects of continuing education at an academic level. The academy works with faculties and institutes when planning and putting into action its continuing education programs, making it an important partner for transferring academic knowledge for use in society.
