YERUN RMA 2019 – Meet Eleni Nisioti

I am a PhD student at the University of Essex, working at the intersection of the Internet of Things and machine learning under the supervision of Dr. Nikolaos Thomos, head of the Communications group. My research interests, in particular, focuses on theoretical multi-agent reinforcement learning and deriving practical solutions of low complexity.

During the second year of my PhD, I visited the University Pompeu Fabra to collaborate with established academics that were tackling problems related to my PhD. In particular, I worked with Prof. Boris Bellalta, head of the wireless networking group, and Prof. Anders Jonsson, head of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning research group. During my visit, I held regular meetings with my hosts, as well as their research groups, attended departmental seminars and presented my PhD work. The involved researchers shared their expertise in practical considerations of wireless sensor networks and theoretical reinforcement learning and we discovered that we were pre-occupied by similar problems, the interdisciplinary nature of which demands for collaboration among researchers with diverse backgrounds.

The received feedback proved valuable and the collaboration with the involved academics continued after the end of my visit, with the aspiration of contributing to the literature of reinforcement learning employed for the optimization of communication networks. Although this first contact was short-term, a meaningful collaboration has arisen thanks to the YERUN mobility award and the eagerness of the researchers to exchange experiences and tackle challenging problems of the technological agenda. Once again, I’d like to thank YERUN for this opportunity and wish a successful continuation of the YERUN Research Mobility Award scheme.
