Following the statement of the Board of the European Innovation Council (EIC) on the Intellectual Property (IP) rules applicable to EIC Pathfinder and Transition projects, published on 2 May 2023, associations of universities, knowledge transfer professionals, research and technology, publish a joint reaction. 

In particular, while the organisations welcome the recommendations made by the EIC Board to the European Commission regarding the definition of EIC inventors as well as the requirement that access rights to EIC inventors are granted only after a specific period of time after the end of the EIC project, they point out that there are still additional aspects highlighted in the previous statement that need further attention. 

Moreover, the organisations commit to working with the EIC Board and the European Commission to develop a Horizon Europe Model Grant Agreement and EIC work programme that incorporates the recommendations presented in their reaction.

“It is very timely that we are publishing this statement on the same day of the European Education and Innovation Summit. Universities are key players in Knowledge Valorisation: their role in this needs to be not only protected, but further supported through targeted policies and funding. With today’s statement reacting to the EIC Board’s revision of the IP provisions, we underline that researchers and research-performing organisations need to collaborate closely to maximise the exploitation of research outcomes.”
