Brunel University of London is world-class research university, combining a technical focus with research excellence that is closely aligned with the needs of equitable and inclusive, environmentally-sustainable global societies and economies.
Since being established in 1966, Brunel has risen to impressive heights and our reputation has grown year on year. Now a university of 14,071 students and a member of the University of London (UoL) federation, our unique approach is to combine academic rigour with practical and entrepreneurial teaching and learning which was pioneered by one of the most celebrated Civil Engineers of the 19th Century, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Fast-forward to today, our distinct foundations remain at the heart of the university. Brunel is one of the UK’s foremost technical universities and has a rich history of world-leading research, innovation and teaching excellence which provides our students with an outstanding, research-led education that sets them up to excel in their future careers. Brunel now ranks in the top 40 UK research-intensive universities with 72.7% of the research we submitted to the UK’s national research assessment exercise being assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent. This exercise also looks at the impact of our research on addressing the needs of the economy and society, and Brunel is one the UK’s leading winners of funding for university industry links.
Brunel ranks 14th in the UK in terms of graduate employability and provides students with a research-informed education, geared towards helping them to build a career when they leave. This applies as much to the ‘sandwich degrees’ that offer industry placement, with which Brunel is famously associated, and to our state-of-the-art focus on craft as a central element of subjects such as Design, Theatre or Creative Writing. What marks Brunel out is the combination of this research, excellence in innovation and focus on real-world relevance and application. We count among our staff two of the 54 United Nations Special Rapporteurs, the UK’s top-cited Computer Scientist and two winners of major literary prizes.
Our single, suburban campus sits in an economic hotspot in West London, on the edge of a global city and just minutes away from one of the world’s most directly and internationally connected airports – London Heathrow. Brunel is one of the most international universities (ranked 1st most international university in the UK) with staff, students, and alumni from all over the world, with a rich and diverse community which reflects the enormous breadth of social, cultural, educational and political identities.
