What political measures can be taken to strengthen European social citizenship? Marius R. Busemeyer from the Department of Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz is part of “The Future of European Social Citizenship” (EUSOCIALCIT), a Horizon 2020-funded project that aims to answer this question.
The Horizon 2020 project “The Future of European Social Citizenship” (EUSOCIALCIT) examines “the state of social rights” in Europe and the role of the EU in the future development of social rights. The interdisciplinary consortium behind the project includes eight academic institutions and an international think tank on EU affairs. Among the academic institutions are three Yerun members: the University of Konstanz, the University of Antwerp and the Carlos III University of Madrid.
One of the sub-projects of EUSOCIALCIT, led by Marius Busemeyer from the University of Konstanz and his colleague Brian Burgoon from the University of Amsterdam, aims to develop a database of country-specific indicators for social civil rights. In addition, the same team has reviewed, consolidated and valorised existing large-scale quantitative research on the perceptions, attitudes and preferences of EU citizens on social rights and enriched this research with focus group surveys in several EU countries. The focus groups – consisting of 6-8 representative citizens from each country – helped to deepen the understanding of citizens’ attitudes and demands regarding European social citizenship.
After four years of successful collaboration, EU funding for EUSOCIALCIT will end in January 2024. The consortium members have regularly published their project results in working papers. These include the latest joint publication by Konstanz-based researchers and their colleagues from Yerun partner Carlos III University of Madrid on “How citizens understand European social citizenship: deepening quantitative survey results with focus group analysis“.
