The University of Rijeka (UNIRI), Faculty of Medicine, will host Dr. Špela Konjar, one of the successful applicants in the last Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Individual Fellowships call. Dr. Špela Konjar will work on the ‘Virus RePro IEL’ project, in the group of Prof. Dr. Stipan Jonjić at the Center for Proteomics.
The major aim of the Virus RePro IEL is to investigate mechanisms by which viruses impact intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), which are key players in intestinal tissue protection, by promoting the elimination of infected cells.
The project will also analyse how IELs behave in different challenges to which intestine could be exposed such as DSS-triggered colitis, antibiotic treatment, and a high-fat diet.
Its results will help develop new therapeutic and diagnostic approaches against diseases of major public health importance, ranging from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colitis to autoimmune disease.
UNIRI is also home to an ongoing ERC-granted project called ‘REVENANT‘ (Revivals of Empire — Nostalgia, Amnesia, Tribulation). The project, led by Dr. Jeremy F. Walton, is hosted by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – Department of Cultural Studies and aims to lay the foundations for a new, international network of studies of post-imperial memories and heritage.
