2023 is an important year for the University of Rijeka, a year filled with events and activities marking half a century of the University’s hard work, activities, and achievements that made the University what it is today – a true European university of the future. While celebrating its 50th anniversary and 20 years of the University of Rijeka Foundation, the University of Rijeka will also assume the important role of project coordinator for EDIH Adria, host the annual YUFE Town Hall to discuss the future of the European Universities Initiative by bringing together representatives of European alliances, and prove its continuous dedication to contributing to the life of the local community and quality ecosystem by participating in numerous community engagement activities.
To kick off the new year, on January 1, 2023, the University of Rijeka, as the coordinator, officially started with the implementation of EDIH Adria (European Digital Innovation Hub Adriatic Croatia), a 3-year project financed by the European Commission, seeking to stimulate the development of an innovation ecosystem including entrepreneurs, employers’ associations and support institutions, the educational sector, and the public sector and policymakers. As part of the European Digital Innovation Hubs Network, EDIH ADRIA is a consortium of experts in AI, high-performance computing, development, and application of digital technologies from two HE institutions (the University of Rijeka and “Juraj Dobrila” University in Pula), two technological leaders (Infobip and Ericsson Nikola Tesla), entrepreneurial supporting institution Step Ri Science and Technology Park of the University of Rijeka and Smart Ri Ltd. technology and innovation cluster.
In February 2023, University of Rijeka is proud to be hosting the annual YUFE Town Hall, gathering academic, non-academic, and external stakeholders to share their strategic perspectives on supporting and implementing the European Strategy for Universities Initiative. The University is also pleased to be joined by representatives of the European Commission and other European alliances (ARQUS, AURORA, EPICUR, EUTOPIA, ECIU) and networks (YERUN) who will give their stance on the transformation of higher education, contributing to seamless and ambitious transnational cooperation between higher education institutions in Europe.
The University of Rijeka Foundation, the leading university foundation in Croatia, is proud to be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023. The University of Rijeka is the only Croatian university with its own foundation, actively contributing to the development of a knowledge society with innovative and sustainable models of philanthropy and contributing to the synergistic development of the academic and local community in the European context.
2023 is also an important year for the study of Dental Medicine, as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the establishment at the University of Rijeka. Although initially an integral part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dental Medicine is now available as an integrated undergraduate and graduate study program at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, officially established as a new UNIRI constituent in 2020.
After last year’s extremely successful and first-ever Student Fiumanka, the University of Rijeka will be organizing its second university sailing regatta. The sailing regatta is conceived as a recreational event preceding the traditional Rijeka cruiser regatta (Fiumanka), designed with the desire to motivate the students to get involved in this fun, popular and widespread sport. Rijeka is a city that lives from the sea and for the sea, and the Student Fiumanka is a stellar opportunity for the students to get acquainted with water sports and encourage everyone to engage in physical activity and adopt a healthier lifestyle.
In addition to all of these events, 2023 will be filled with numerous other events, summer schools, conferences, symposia, lectures, etc., contributing to the celebratory spirit suitable for celebrating such an important milestone for our University, city, and community. The University fo Rijeka invites all its YERUN friends to follow all its celebratory events, and for those wishing to visit Rijeka for the first time, traveling to Croatia is now easier than ever, as the Croatians have rung in the New Year by joining the Schengen and the Eurozone after nearly a decade since joining the EU.
