UEF is a pioneer of open science in Finland

The University of Eastern Finland has taken determined steps to develop its services and competence in the field of open science, and the results of this work can now be seen in a new evaluation report, the Atlas of Open Science and Research in Finland in 2019, published by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. The report evaluates the openness of the operational culture of the country’s research organisations and examines how research organisations promote open science and research.

The University of Eastern Finland was ranked at the highest level of maturity in this evaluation. At the highest level, open science constitutes part of an organisation’s strategic activities. In the evaluation, the university’s services and policies relating to open science in particular received high scores. Nearly all scientific publications by UEF researchers are made openly accessible through the university’s open access repository, UEF e-Repository (available at https://erepo.uef.fi/), or by publishing them in other open access channels.

The University of Eastern Finland has also committed to the Declaration for Open Science and Research for 2020–2025, which is a joint initiative of the Finnish research community. The declaration provides a common direction for the development of the Finnish research community and outlines a vision where open science and research are seamlessly integrated in researchers’ everyday work.

“We are convinced that open science is the most effective way to enhance and strengthen the quality and impact of research. Our next strategy period will witness increasing efforts to promote open science in Finland and abroad, in collaboration with other universities, the public sector and companies,” Rector of the University of Eastern Finland Jukka Mönkkönen says.
