YERUN RMA 2018 – Meet Creina Slator

From Dublin City University –> To University of Southern Denmark

There is an unmet clinical need to expand chemotherapeutic treatment options. Models to investigate unique intracellular interactions that can overcome innate repair mechanisms is significant in comprehending the underpinning action of metal-based developmental agents. Dr. Creina Slator is a postdoctoral researcher in Prof. Andrew Kellett’s group, based in Dublin City University (DCU, www.andrewkellettgroup.com). Her research focuses on metal-based drug DNA interactions and intracellular mechanisms through a variety of molecular biological and biophysical techniques and she sought to expand this to the field of X-ray crystallography in order to evaluate potential application of novel metal-based materials.

The technique allows for the atomic and molecular structural determination of crystals through the unique diffraction pattern of X-ray beams. Through the support of YERUN’s Research Mobility Award, Dr. Slator travelled with Prof. Vickie McKee (DCU) to the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense to visit the lab of Prof. Christine McKenzie to train on the state-of-the-art XtaLAB Synergy-S single crystal X-ray diffractometer and elucidate molecular structures of copper anticancer drugs.

Creina Slator was awarded one of the 26 Research Mobility Awards of the 1st call for applications that YERUN offered in 2018.
