European Open Science Cloud Summit

EOSC 12 June 2017

On 12 June, our YERUN Expert on Open Science, Dr. Eva Méndez Rodríguez, participated as a speaker at the European Open Science Cloud Summit, in Brussels.

The meeting gathered key stakeholders to contribute to the Open Science policy debate, looking at prioritising challenges and solutions for developing strong data culture and ecosystems, the adoption and implementation of FAIR data principles, existing research infrastructures and services but also, sustainable funding and governance.

Commissioner Moedas reiterated there is no need to create something new but to build on existing systems available in Member States. The EOSC (European Open Science Cloud) shall be a single interface that connects existing resources and should target three main challenges: fragmentation, interdisciplinarity and inclusiveness.

YERUN’s representative in the EU Open Science Policy Platform, Eva Méndez, advocated the need for education of Early Career Researchers, a young generation that are struggling to make a career based on publishing. “The EOSC should be useful, easy, effective and affordable for researchers. Open Science is a reality, due to technical and policy advances. But if research data cannot be found, accessed, integrated and re-used, the goals of Open Science will remain aspirations beyond the practical reach of many”, she argued, during the first panel of the Summit.

Cultural change to favor the implementation of Open Science is paramount, but not only of researchers’ minds but also universities, funders, reward and career development systems and related legislation.

Some concrete commitments are now put on the table and stakeholders should bring them forward: capacity building for culture change, role of universities in research and training in Open Science, establishment and consolidation of FAIR data and criteria for data management, among others.

YERUN remains committed to facilitate an alignment towards Open Science and will contribute to define the training needs of researchers and the requirements for change.
